Welcome to Episode 44 of the Voices to Veterans podcast. This episode features the story of Radio Telegraph Operator Second Class Leon Schiff, U.S. Merchant Marine.

Leon served in the U.S. Merchant Marine from 1944–45. Motivated by patriotism and a desire to do his part in the fight against Germany and Japan, he joined the Merchant Marine when his nearsightedness prevented him from serving in the Army, Navy, and Coast Guard. He went through months of intense training to learn Morse code and become a radio telegraph operator before being assigned to his first ship, a seagoing tug operating in the Gulf of Mexico.
