Mark served for fifteen years in the Minnesota Air National Guard. During his career, he served as a weapons instructor, provided security for transport aircraft, and deployed on short notice in support of U.S. counterterrorism and counterdrug operations. He also had the opportunity to serve with his father, Command Chief Master Sergeant Dave Himmer, U.S. Air Force (Retired).
